Magma ExpressBox1 - PCI Express Outside the Box

Cabled PCI Express for Desktops and Laptops

Magma ExpressBox1 is an easy-to-use external expansion device for attaching a PCI Express® card to a laptop or desktop computer.

In a mobile environment, ExpressBox1 allows a user to combine the power of a desktop and the mobility of a laptop into a powerful, flexible, mobile workstation. For example, a user can turn a typical, middle-of-the-road laptop into a powerful gaming computer, a scientific computer, or an audio/video editing workstation simply by adding the right PCI Express card to ExpressBox1 and then connecting it to a laptop through an ExpressCard/34 module and cable.

In the desktop computers and servers, ExpressBox1 allows a user to move full-length, heat-generating, or power hungry PCI Express cards outside the computer by providing dedicated power and cooling in an external enclosure.  ExpressBox1 is ideal for attaching full-length PCI Express cards to low-profile computers that have limited space.  The connection to the host computer is through a PCIe host card and cable.

Zero latency, 2000Mbps, Faster than USB and Firewire

Based on new PCI Express® technology, ExpressBox1 provides a zero latency connectivity solution with a theoretical maximum throughput of 2000Mbps (or 250 MegaBytes per second) each direction... That's 2.5 times faster than Firewire 800 and 4.1 times the speed of USB 2.0!

Magma ExpressBox1 (Model EB1H) weighs only 2.8 pounds and supports single width cards up to 6.604 inches long.

Magma ExpressBox1 Pro (Model EB1F) weighs only 4.3 pounds and can support single width cards up to 12.283 inches long.

  • Light-wieght and easy method for attaching full-size or half-size PCI Express cards to a laptop or desktop computer

Attention External Graphics Users

Magma ExpressBox1 is designed for "single-width" graphics cards that require no more than 55 watts of power.

"Double or Triple-wide" cards that require additional power and more slot space will be compatible with Magma ExpressBox2 or ExpressBox4. ExpressBox2 will be available late 2008 and the ExpressBox4 is available now! Please contact Magma for more information at sales@magma.com or submit an inquiry.

FOR WINDOWS VISTA: It is best to use a laptop with ATI graphics technology paired with an external ATI graphics card. For Quad Video, we recommend Nvidia NVS440 with Sony Viao SZ Series.

FOR MACOS X: External graphics works with MacBook Pro 2.33GHz only. Use the Nvidia 7300GT graphcis card (Apple part number 661-3932, available at www.mac-pro.com. The ATI Radeon x1900XT and Nvidia Quadro FX 4500 are "double-wide" cards and will not physically fit into Magma ExpressBox1.

Rui Pereir, Interaction Designer, Media Performer/Artist: "Within an hour of receiving my Magma ExpressBox, I had a realtime video interface and multi-monitor setup working flawlessly. I am running four monitors from my 2nd Generation Apple MacBook Pro. I am using two monitors with independent realtime graphics outputs, one TFT touchscreen and my laptop's TFT screen is used as a preview monitor.
