MOBILITY ELECTRONICS INTRODUCES
MAGMA EXPRESSCARD TO PCI EXPANSION SYSTEM FOR LAPTOP COMPUTERS
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., (June 27, 2006) -- Mobility Electronics, Inc. (Nasdaq: MOBE), a leading provider of innovative portable power and computing solutions for the mobile electronic device user, announced today the availability of the first Magma ExpressCard to PCI Expansion System for laptop computers. The new Magma expansion chassis provides an easy solution for adding PCI cards to laptop computers through the 54mm ExpressCard slot appearing on many new PC Laptop computers.
As the new PCI Express® architecture becomes more common on today's laptop computers, users can add one, two, four, or more PCI slots to their laptop computer through the new ExpressCard slot. This allows creative and scientific professionals to use PCI cards, typically installed in a desktop PC, with laptop computers. Practically any type of PCI card can be used in the Magma expansion chassis ranging from audio processing, video capture, graphics, test & measurement, data-acquisition, SCSI, FibreChannel, SATA and more.
This product provides a method to launch traditional desktop applications into the mobile computing environment. Computer solution providers and hardware manufacturers can use the new Magma expansion product to break into potentially untapped mobile computer markets by providing a method to use desktop-like peripheral devices with laptop computers.
The connection to the computer through PCI Express exhibits bandwidth almost two times the bandwidth we experience with legacy PCI expansion technologies.
The connection to the laptop is through a 54mm ExpressCard module. A 1-meter expansion cable connects the ExpressCard module to the Magma PCI expansion chassis. This product is compatible with laptops that include an ExpressCard/54 slot.
Currently in development is a solution for the Apple® MacBook™ Pro, which requires a 34mm ExpressCard module. The company looks to introduce this new technology later this year.
"By introducing the first Magma ExpressCard to PCI Expansion System for laptop computers, we are expanding our position as a leading innovator and provider of hardware solutions to computer users," said Charlie Mollo, CEO of Mobility Electronics. "Mobility Electronics is dedicated to continuing our world-class technology advancements. The Magma division continues to provide new technologies to numerous industries including embedded, aerospace and defense markets."
For those who may already own a Magma PCI expansion chassis, the Magma ExpressCard/54 (EC54) is an easy upgrade for laptop computers that include the new ExpressCard/54 slot. The Magma EC54 connects to the same cable included with previous generation Magma expansion chassis.
Mobility Electronics' Magma brand is the leading provider of PCI Expansion Systems for several industries and provides innovative expansion solutions to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), resellers and end-users in more than 45 countries.
