Attach (3) full-length PCIe cards to your Thunderbolt equipped computer.
ExpressBox 3T provides an 'outside-the-box' solution for using PCIe cards with Thunderbolt-equipped computers. High-performance work flows are possible by connecting a Thunderbolt equipped computer to a Thunderbolt expansion chassis containing PCIe cards such as video capture, media transcoding, audio processing, and fast data storage. And because Thunderbolt is also based on DisplayPort technology, you can daisy chain a high-resolution display with your Magma ExpressBox 3T.

No firmware, software or driver is required from Magma, but you may need an updated driver for your PCIe card.
Check the PCIe Card Compatibility Page for a list of cards that have Thunderbolt Compatible drivers. If your PCIe card is not on this list, contact the card manufacturer to ask if they have a Thunderbolt Compatible driver.
No, it will not work as a add-in PCIe card in a Mac Tower.
“I've been using a pre-production unit since mid-May, and it's fantastic. I've got HD Native running with an early 2011 17" Macbook Pro, and so far this setup handles anything my old HD2 1/2 would do. I say 2 1/2 because I had an HD2 Accel plus an additional HD process card (not Accel). I'm still using my 2 192 I/O's with additional cards for 24 analog I/O and it's been great. I primarily do work that doesn't utilize lots of virtual instruments, but nevertheless this system has been super solid.
I'm currently using a 27" Apple LED Cinema Display daisy-chained off of the ExpressBox 3T, and external FW drive attached to my MacBook Pro for audio. Great system, so far very pleased!”

"The strength of the Magma ExpressBox 3T is its ability to make your PCIe adapters function with any Mac with a Thunderbolt port. Some professionals need to work in remote locations. Rather than schlep their Mac Pro to that location, they can pull the storage adapters or video/audio adapters out of their Mac Pro, install them in the ExpressBox 3T, and connect it to a MacBook Pro. During our comparative testing, we moved the ATTO ExpressSAS R644 RAID adapter back and forth between the Mac Pro and a 2012 iMac connected to the ExpressBox 3T. When the ExpressBox 3T and drive enclosure were powered up, the four SSD RAID 0 set mounted instantly and was ready to go. And though we demonstrated the limits of the transfer speeds over Thunderbolt, those speeds are fully adequate for many video and audio applications. Magma states that there is sufficient bandwidth for audio DSP with Pro Tools. Also Red uses ExpressBox 3T to run Red Rocket cards on their Thunderbolt Macs for all of their 'Reducation' tours."

"Qualifying our UAD-2 PCIe DSP Accelerator cards for peripherals like the Magma ExpressBox 3T is another important step in bringing our customers next-generation connectivity to their audio production workflow. Now our customers have the flexibility to use their PCIe cards with a whole slew of new Apple products besides the Mac Pro tower — including MacBook Pros."
